PROFILE

MPhil Environmental Sociology / Research Scientist in environmental and rural research on livelihood and impact of human settlement on the environment with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Water Research Institute. She was the Head of Division for the Scientific Secretariat of the Commercialization and Information Division from the year 2007-2012. Head of Scientific Secretariat of the Commercialization and Information Division. A Graduate Teaching Assistant at Legon Sociology Department from 2006-2007. Maria was a facilitator at the Women Advancement Forum International Exchanges, Research & Academia (WAFIRA) for “Situation Analysis on Gender Resources Control”; Analytical Framework for Data Collection and Analysis. In 2006 she had a CGIAR Challenge Program on Water and Food, No.34 Award a partial Grant and in 2004 a Winrock International Grant (Partial) from the African Women Leaders in Agriculture and Environment (AWLAE) also partial award. She won a Spanish Government (UNESCO) a one and a half years award of $100.00 as the hunter for project on Sustainable Management of Lake Bosomtwe in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, Hydrology, Water Quality and Anthropology. She is a member of Women Advancement Forum International Exchanges, Research & Academia WAFIRA and the African Women in Agriculture Research and Development (AWARD) and other affiliations. She has written several articles some could be found at “ResearchGate”.

Research Interests:

Her research interest is in Water Governance, Traditional or Local Knowledge in resources conservation, Geographical planning, social issues in water degradation, fisheries development and the environment. Other areas of interest are in the role of woman in water related issues and their todays coping strategies. Her main interest is in understanding social issues or social institutions through participatory research, where technologies would be developed in relation to the local systems and environment to be acceptable and practical for end users, to help improve on our waterbodies and the environment.

Current Research

Water pollution, Indigenous / Traditional Knowledge and Water Governance or Policy and implementation. Current completed research project on, Indigenous Knowledge in Freshwater Governance. It examines the structures and institutional structures in water governance taking into consideration challenges leading to the deterioration of freshwater. A case study of Lake Bosomtwe in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The largest natural lake in West Africa and the third largest in the world. It is very rich in aquatic biodiversity of global and national significance and one of the major sources of livelihood for 24 communities living in and around the Lake’s catchment area, and I am currently working on the underlying principles in indigenous knowledge towards the sustainability of water governance.
