Profile

Dr Samuel Armoo is a Senior Research Scientist at the Biomedical and Public Health Research Unit of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – Water Research Institute. He received a BSc degree in Zoology at the University of Ghana, and an MPhil degree in Public Health from the same University. He holds a PhD degree in Molecular Genetics and Medical Parasitology from La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. Due to his cognitive flexibility, he was appointed as the Team Leader of the COVID-19 PCR testing facility of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, after the President of Ghana’s initiative to increase the number of COVID-19 PCR testing facilities in the country. As Team Leader, he selected and trained laboratory personnel to received contact tracing samples from the Ghana Health Service, and PCR-assay them for onward submission to the real-time disease surveillance system of the Government of Ghana. Dr Armoo has been the molecular diagnostics team lead for environmental surveillance of pathogens of interest in the Institute. Driven by the desire to contribute to efforts to reduce the burden of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), he has employed effective tools based on his knowledge on the epidemiology, parasitology and population genetics of their causative agents. In his research works, he has applied next-generation sequencing, bioinformatics, biostatistics, quantitative real-time PCR and DNA cloning techniques. He has published on the population genetics, molecular diagnostics, and operational research of some key NTDs.

Profile of Samuel Armoo

Dr Samuel Armoo is a Research Scientist at the Biomedical and Public Health Research Unit of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – Water Research Institute. He obtained his BSc degree in Zoology (Second Class Upper Division) at the University of Ghana in 2004, and a Public Health MPhil degree also at the same University in 2009. He also holds a PhD degree in Molecular Genetics and Medical Parasitology from the La Trobe University in Melbourne Australia. He is passionate about, and contributes to knowledge generation and transfer in the population genetics, and operational research of schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, soil-transmitted helminthes and other Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). This involves designing and leading epidemiological and parasitological studies to evaluate the impact of mass drug administration against some NTDs. He also has expertise in the development of molecular diagnostic tools for many tropical infectious pathogens. He has published on the population genetics, molecular diagnostics, and operational research of onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthes. He has also supervised several postgraduate students in some Universities in Ghana. He has teaching experience in population and ecological genetics at the La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. He is a member of the Ghana Science Association, American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and the Public Health Association of Australia.
